The Musicaliti Early Years Music Progression™

The Musicaliti Early Years Music Progression™ is a framework for understanding and supporting musical development in the early years.

Originally developed in 2013, it sits within the wider Musicaliti® body of work and offers a way of thinking about progression that is grounded in practice, attentive to development, and responsive to the realities of early years settings.

This page offers a brief introduction to the progression: what it is, why it exists, and how it is intended to be understood.

Why it exists

The progression was developed to support clearer understanding of how musical development may be noticed, described and supported in the early years.

Rather than reducing musical learning to a fixed sequence or narrow set of outcomes, it offers a framework for thinking carefully about how musicality emerges and develops over time. It is intended to help practitioners, educators and others working with young children hold musical development with greater clarity, confidence and sensitivity.

At its heart, the progression reflects a long-standing interest in musical growth as something living, relational and developmental, rather than simply performative or product-led.

Overview of the progression

The progression provides a high-level way of recognising and articulating musical development in the early years.

It is concerned not simply with what children can do, but with how musical awareness, responsiveness, confidence and expression may emerge and deepen through experience, interaction, repetition, listening, play and participation.

The progression is not presented here in full detail. This page serves as a locating point rather than a teaching guide. Its purpose is to name and hold the framework clearly, while the introductory PDF and related resources provide further context.

In broad terms, the progression supports attention to areas such as:

Relationship to practice

The progression emerged through practice and reflection. It is connected to a wider body of songs, publications, videos, articles and other materials, but is not reducible to any one of these.

Those resources may offer practical illustrations of the progression in different contexts. They are not presented as a fixed sequence of lessons, but as examples of the work in practice.
